Artist Statement/Biography:

Charleen Stroud moved to Canada from South Africa more than 20 years ago. With a MA(FA) in ceramics, she has extensive university teaching experience and has exhibited internationally in Faenza (Italy), Vallauris (France) and Mino (Japan). She generally works and teaches from her home studio in Kitsilano where she lives with her two cats. In addition, Charleen makes some of her work at Café au Clay near Granville Island, where she interacts with other clay-artists.

"I have always had issues with the seemingly arbitrary nature of the art/craft divide and am interested in making work that is both functional and decorative while also being thought-provoking. My love of all forms of making is a testament to my inspiring stonemason father and seamstress mother who made no distinction between art and craft."

She is currently collaborating with her sister, Zelda (a goldsmith and sculptor), focussing on individually crafted, upmarket, porcelain jewelry pieces.
