Rachael Ashe is a multidisciplinary artist with a background as a professional photographer, and is self-taught in paper-cutting, sculpting, and collage. Her work is an intersection of the disciplines of art, craft, and design. Rachael credits her former position as a photographer at the Textile Museum of Canada as a major influence on her work with paper to this day.
Rachael’s utilizes mixed patterns in both her cut-paper and collage work. She is interested in pushing the limits of what is considered too much, while still creating a composition that is balanced and harmonious.
Working with patterns has been an interesting means of exploring history, the effects of colonialism, the intersections and influence between different cultures, the rich symbolism and meaning in patterns, etc. Rachael enjoys the challenge of bringing very different types of patterns together in a single piece of work, to observe how they interact, connect, vibrate or harmonize with one another.
